OVERVIEW
This course is intended for use by folks with macular degeneration, or other issues involving vision impairment. My personal label is “legally blind” so everything presented here will assume you are similarly handicapped. We will deal with the very basics of digital photography….cameras, taking pictures, processing pictures in you computer, and sharing them with others.
Now there is one issue I would like to deal with at the outset: The word is intimidation. There are many aspects of digital photography that tend to be intimidating because they are strange and appear complicated. Mostly, they are. Digital photography is quite complex, but what we will attempt to accomplish is to skin off the top just enough basic knowledge so that we can quickly start having some fun while developing a new hobby.
Is digital photography for you? Do you enjoy exploring new interest areas? Do you like to look at photographs? Would you like to be able to take a picture and minutest later e-mail to someone? Would you like to print your own photos? Would you like to have them published on a web site? If your response has been positive, then I strongly urge you to take this brief course and start having new and exciting fun.
The one thing that I cannot measure is the state of your vision; however, I am going to generally assume that if you can read this, you can successfully take and process photographs. If there is any doubt in your mind, then here is a suggestion: Surely, you have someone near you who has a digital camera. Explain to them what you are considering, ask them to set their camera onto full automatic (most are) so that you can just point and shoot some pictures. Take 5-6 shots; remember in digital photography there is no film to waste. After taking the pictures, ask your friend to download them into their computer so that you can look at them. Now a word of caution, you will be looking at “camera raw” and not finished images,
see samples here. Please do not become discouraged with the images you see. I have taken many photographs with people’s heads cut off; sometimes I totally miss the object. Do not fret about that, it comes with the territory and unwanted photos can be promptly removed with that old friend the “DEL.” key. In actual practice, you will very rarely take a photograph that does not require some form of adjustment. At this level, the main thing to be accomplished is to establish the fact that you can pick up a camera and take pictures.
